Quality Control (QC) Inspector

Position Summary

The QC Inspector performs day-to-day inspections of building construction materials, installations, and workmanship to verify compliance with approved drawings, specifications, submittals, method statements, ITPs, codes, and project quality procedures. The inspector documents inspection results, identifies deficiencies, witnesses required tests, and works closely with field supervision to prevent defective work from being covered or accepted.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct receiving, in-process, hold-point, pre-cover, final, and punch-list inspections in assigned areas or disciplines.

  • Review current approved drawings, specifications, submittals, shop drawings, method statements, ITPs, and checklists before inspecting work.

  • Verify material identity, approval status, condition, storage, handling, batch or heat numbers, certificates, and shelf life, as applicable.

  • Inspect building work such as excavation and backfill, reinforcement, formwork, concrete, structural steel, masonry, roofing, waterproofing, doors and windows, partitions, ceilings, finishes, MEP services, firestopping, and external works, according to assignment and competency.

  • Confirm that dimensions, elevations, tolerances, locations, embedded items, penetrations, supports, clearances, and installation details match approved documents.

  • Witness field and laboratory testing and record results, including sampling information and test locations.

  • Confirm that testing instruments and inspection equipment have valid calibration status before use.

  • Prepare clear, accurate, and timely inspection reports, requests for inspection, checklists, photographs, daily logs, and deficiency records.

  • Identify and immediately report nonconforming materials or work to the QC Manager and responsible construction supervisor.

  • Mark, segregate, or otherwise control rejected materials where required, and verify approved corrective work before closure.

  • Monitor ongoing work to ensure approved procedures are followed and required inspections occur before work is concealed.

  • Coordinate inspection timing with site engineers, foremen, subcontractors, consultants, laboratories, and client representatives.

  • Verify completion of preparatory requirements, approved mock-ups, samples, and prerequisite work before installation proceeds.

  • Support NCR investigations, corrective actions, root-cause reviews, audits, punch walks, commissioning, and project turnover.

  • Maintain organized and traceable quality records and submit completed documentation to the QC Manager or document control team.

  • Communicate quality requirements respectfully and promptly while maintaining independence and objectivity.

  • Follow all project health, safety, security, and environmental requirements during inspections.

Authority

The QC Inspector is authorized to:

  • Identify, document, and report nonconforming work or materials.

  • Request that affected work be held pending review by the QC Manager or authorized project representative.

  • Refuse to sign or accept an inspection that does not satisfy the specified acceptance criteria.

  • Require access to work and supporting documentation necessary to complete an inspection.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Diploma, associate degree, trade qualification, or bachelor’s degree in civil engineering, construction technology, architecture, building services, or a related field.

  • Typically 3–5 years of relevant inspection or construction experience on building projects; discipline-specific experience may be required.

  • Practical understanding of construction methods, sequencing, tolerances, materials, and common building defects.

  • Ability to read drawings, specifications, shop drawings, inspection plans, and technical data.

  • Familiarity with applicable building codes and standards such as ASTM, ACI, AWS, NFPA, ICC, or project-specified equivalents.

  • Ability to prepare concise inspection records and use digital inspection or construction management systems.

  • Strong attention to detail, integrity, communication skills, and ability to work effectively with field teams.

  • Relevant inspector certifications—such as ICC, ACI, AWS, NICET, or equivalent—are preferred or required depending on the assigned discipline and jurisdiction.

Working Conditions

  • Primarily field-based in active construction areas, with exposure to weather, dust, noise, heights, confined spaces, and uneven terrain.

  • Ability to stand and walk for extended periods, climb stairs or ladders, access inspection points, and wear required PPE.

  • May require early starts, shift work, overtime, or weekend work to witness time-sensitive construction and testing activities.

Key Performance Indicators

  • Accuracy and completeness of inspection records.

  • Timeliness of inspections and report submission.

  • Percentage of required inspections completed before work is covered.

  • Detection and prompt escalation of defects or deviations.

  • Timely verification and closure of deficiencies and punch-list items.

  • Compliance with project inspection procedures and record-traceability requirements.
